I wanted to build a teardrop trailer for about a decade. The small stature, utilitarian nature and retro styling all appealed to me. I read, I researched, I watched videos and I even had a donor trailer ready for the build. Colors were discussed. My wife was fully onboard. So much ambition… on paper. I’m notoriously taking on an increasingly optimistic number of projects, and they just don’t all make the cut. The teardrop, sadly, was not meant to be. So we pivoted.
A summer camping trip in 2015 turned out to be the perfect excuse. Since I hadn’t found the time to build my recreational paradise on wheels, I’d buy a big metal box to start with. After scouring ads for new and used cargo trailers, my wife and I made a trip to the Salt Lake City Trailersplus.com store and we promptly up-sold ourselves. I arrived thinking that we’d just need something large enough for my four-wheeler. A ramp door would be nice. Well hey, this one is 6’6″ inside…
So we purchased a 2015 Loadrunner 6×12 single axel. It has 15″ wheels and about a 1500lb cargo capacity for roughly a 3000lb gross vehicle weight fully loaded. This trailer is an aircraft carrier compared to a teardrop, but my Toyota FJ could tow it no problem. I wasn’t sure exactly what the finished product was going to look like, but I knew that I could stand up in it and I wouldn’t have to sleep on the ground, so I felt pretty happy with our purchase.
The new trailer was so spacious, I sold the four wheeler and shoe-horned a Razor 900 in the back the following year.
